Ron Rivera’s parents, Dolores and Eugenio Rivera, have been his strong supporters throughout his football career. Ron grew up in a disciplined military household, where his father, Eugenio, served in the United States Army as a Puerto Rican and met his future wife, Dolores, in California. This upbringing instilled in Ron a sense of discipline and responsibility, which he incorporates into his coaching approach.
Ronald Eugene Rivera, the current head coach of the Washington Commanders in the NFL, had a successful playing career before transitioning to coaching. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft and later joined the Bears’ coaching staff after retiring from playing. Rivera also had coaching stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Carolina Panthers, where he achieved notable success, including being named NFL Coach of the Year twice and leading the Panthers to Super Bowl 50.
Dolores and Eugenio Rivera have been a significant source of inspiration and support for their son throughout his football journey. Dolores, in particular, played a crucial role in keeping Ron focused and committed to his athletic pursuits by shielding him from distractions. Ron’s diverse heritage reflects his father’s Puerto Rican ethnicity and his mother’s Mexican and Filipino descent. The family’s military background led to Ron attending schools in various countries before settling in Marina, California.
Tragically, Ron’s mother, Dolores, passed away in 2022 under unclear circumstances. Ron fondly remembers her active involvement in various events and her dedicated support as a team mom for his sports teams.
Ron also faced the loss of his elder brother, Mickey, to pancreatic cancer in 2015. Mickey’s battle with cancer had a profound impact on Ron, motivating him to support organizations such as the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Additionally, Ron underwent chemotherapy for his own battle with cancer in 2020, demonstrating his resilience and determination both on and off the field.
