George Herbert, 8th Earl of Carnarvon is a British aristocrat and businessman who was born on 10 November 1956 in London, United Kingdom. He is the son of Henry Herbert, 7th Earl of Carnarvon and Anne Tredick Wendell. He is the grandson of George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who was the financial backer of the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. He was educated at Eton College and then at the University of Oxford, where he studied modern history. After graduating, he worked in the City of London for a number of years before taking up the role of managing director of Highclere Enterprises, the family business. He succeeded his father as the 8th Earl of Carnarvon in 2001. He is also the hereditary High Steward of the City of Newbury and a Deputy Lieutenant of Berkshire. He is married to Fiona Aitken, daughter of the late Sir William Aitken, 3rd Baronet. They have two children, Lady Isabella and Lord Porchester. He succeeded to the title of Earl of Carnarvon when his father died on 11 September 2001. After the death in 2003 of the 17th Earl of Pembroke, a distant cousin, he also became heir to the Earldoms of Pembroke and Montgomery, held by patrilineal cousin, William Herbert, 18th Earl of Pembroke, and is currently third in line.

His maternal uncle Malcolm Wallop, a rancher in Wyoming, served three terms in the United States Senate. His mother was close friends with Queen Elizabeth II, his godmother.
